DescriptionAlthough the Honan Chapel is associated with University College Cork it was established as a separate legal entity and still remains so. This pillar is part of wall which separates the chapel from the university. The shield of the Honan Hostel and Chapel is displayed on the inside of the pillar while the shield of the university is displayed on the outside of the pillar. This represents two separate jurisdictions. This topic has been comprehensively examined by Virginia Teehan & Elizabeth Wincott Heckett in The Honan Chapel: A Golden Vision published by Cork University Press in 2004.
