| Image Title | Honan Chapel: detail of capitals flanking the west door |
| Description | The Cork diocesian arms can be seen in this detail of the west door. Heraldry plays an important part in the decoration of the Honan Chapel. The significant emblems are the crests of the Honan family; the Honan Hostel; Rev. Sir. John Robert O´Connell and the Munster bishops. Below the diocesian arms you can see a wooden peg plugging a socket. These sockets once held wrought-iron grille gates designed by William Scott, professor of architecture, University Colege Dublin and made by McLoughlin & Sons, Dublin. This item has been comprehensively examined by Virginia Teehan & Elizabeth Wincott Heckett in The Honan Chapel: A Golden Vision published by Cork University Press in 2004. |
