The Honan Chapel - Gallery Collection

Image TitleHonan Collection: black dossal
DescriptionThe dossal hung behind the altar. The spiral patterns infilling the terminals of the cross and the cental boss are inspired by carpet pages in the 7th century Book of Durrow (Trinity Colleg, Dublin). The black set of hangings and vestments was used for the annual Founders´ Day Mass, which took place in the third week of October, and was the ceremonial memorial for the Honan family. The back is inscribed with the names of the women who worked on them. It was designed by Katherine Mac Cormack and Evelyn Gleeson. The seamstress of the Dun Emer Guild who worked on this were Kate Dempsey; Josephine Mulhall; Siobain Ní Dilluin; Christina Fanning; Mary Perry; Shelia Stapleton; and Mary Kerley. This item has been catalogued by Virginia Teehan & Elizabeth Wincott Heckett in The Honan Chapel: A Golden Vision published by Cork University Press in 2004. This item is in storage and are in need of conservation.
