The Honan Chapel - Gallery Collection
| Image Title | Honan Collection: ewer and stand |
| Description | The principle of washing the hands before celebrating the holy Liturgy -- at first an obvious practical precaution of cleanness, then interpreted also symbolically -- occurs in all rites. In 1916 a large silver jug and basin, like the one pictured, would have been used at high Mass when a bishop washed his hands while he was incensed. This silver-gilt pitcher is in the shape of an open-beaked bird. It is decorated with crosses and bands of interlace. This item has been catalogued by Virginia Teehan & Elizabeth Wincott Heckett in The Honan Chapel: A Golden Vision published by Cork University Press in 2004. |
