This course is an introduction to trauma-informed care for practitioners. It will examine this approach  as a response to addressing the impact of exposure to early trauma and attachment disruption on children.



The Course will be delivered in a series of 8, 3 hour lectures designed to enhance practitioners’ knowledge of trauma-informed care. It will cover the following topics:

  1. Definition and theoretical principles of trauma-informed care.
  2. The impact of early trauma on children’s development (neurobiology, attachment, behaviour, sensory and emotional regulation).
  3. Application of a developmental trauma framework.
  4. An introduction to trauma-informed care methods of intervention with children and families.
  5. Integration of  trauma-informed care practices into practitioner’s respective roles.
  6. Developing capacity for reflective practice through a trauma lens and trauma-informed self-care practices.




Group participation, completion of a self-reflective journal and end of course written reflection (1000 words).

Course will start at 7:00pm and finish at 10:00pm each evening

Who teaches this course

This course has been developed by Maria Lotty, MA/DIP SW, B. Soc, Sc., in response to  findings of her current PhD research where  a gap in practitioner training on trauma-informed care was identified.

Maria is a specialist in trauma-informed care completing her PhD in this field at University College Cork (UCC). She is the Co-ordinator of the Trauma-informed Care Research Project, a research collaboration between UCC and Tusla, Child and Family Agency and is the author of the Fostering Connections: The Trauma-informed Foster Care Programme. Maria has also 20 years professional experience as a social worker having worked in foster care and child protection in Ireland and the UK.
