Tyndall National Institute New Facility
The project is the development of a new 17,000m² facility on a site adjacent to the existing Tyndall facility in Cork. The new building will allow Tyndall to expand its research operations in a new state of the art facility.
The new facility is designed to accommodate a doubling in size of Tyndall over the next ten years, as reflected in the Government’s National Development Plan. The proposed new facility will cater for up 250 post-graduate students (currently at circa 125) and 750 staff (currently circa 325).
The proposed site is located on the North Mall site, also known as Distillery Fields, which is located immediately across the north channel of the River Lee from the Tyndall National Institute.
The Tyndall expansion is based on the express requirement of Government to upgrade and expand the Institute’s world-leading capabilities and expertise in cutting edge, state-of-the-art research. This has been explicitly referenced in the Governments Project 2040, National Development Plan 2018-2027 as well as within the subsequent DBEI document Investing in Business, Enterprise and Innovation 2018-2027. This investment will position Tyndall as an international leader of scale in translational research in order to play a key role in the further development of ICT innovation and impact in Ireland.
Tyndall is to commence a major expansion of its research infrastructure and related footprint under provisions within the government’s National Development Plan (NDP) 2018-2027 (Project Ireland 2040). The investment will see Tyndall significantly expand, enhancing its central role as a key driver of economic impact from technology research and innovation. As a result of this investment, TNI will double in size over the NDP period and expand its international role as a leading global research institute.
