UCC School of Chemistry participated in the first Carnival of Science, hosted by the Lifetime Laboratory, Cork City Council in Fitzgerald Park on 21 and 22 June. Approximately 10,000 people attended the event over two days. Staff and students volunteered to showcase the magic of chemistry to the public with live demonstrations of science, and fun experiments to get families involved. The event was sponsored by Science Foundation Ireland and proved to be a fantastic success.

Staff and students were delighted to give the children a wonderful interactive experience of the magic of chemistry. They also spoke to the public about their SFI funded future innovator prize award and the SMARTProbe project which is a technology to provide an immediate diagnosis of breast cancer during biopsy. Overall, it was a great weekend and a brilliant Carnival of Science, and the School of Chemistry is looking forward to supporting it again next year.
