The Honan Chapel - Gallery Collection

Image TitleThe mace, University College Cork
DescriptionIn 1910, Sir Bertram Windle stipulated that the mace for the newly established University College Cork was to be made in Cork by William Egan & Sons, 32 Patrick St., Cork. That stipulation by Windle proved a catalyst for the re-establishment in Cork of the ancient craft of working in silver and gold, and it continues to the present day in a small way, although sadly, the firm of William Egan & Sons finally closed in 1986. The mace rests on the President´s kneeler in the Honan Chapel. This was designed by James F. McMullen and made by John Sisk and Son, Cork. The design suggests folds of drapery partly revealing Celtic knot and rope patterns.
